When the museums close, Mantua takes on a different look: the squares fill up for aperitivo, the lakes glow at sunset and the illuminated palaces look like a stage set. The city is small and safe to walk around in the evening too.
If you’re leaving on an evening train, store your suitcases at Mantova Locker, near the station, and enjoy the evening to the very end.

The stops
1. Sunset on the Ponte di San Giorgio
The bridge between the Lago di Mezzo and the Lower Lake is the spot where you see Mantua’s whole skyline reflected in the water. At sunset the dome of Sant’Andrea and the castle towers glow orange.
2. Piazza Sordello by night
In the evening the illuminated façades of Palazzo Ducale and the Cathedral make the square even more dramatic. Next to it is the House of Rigoletto, with the statue of Verdi’s jester.
3. Aperitivo in Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza Broletto
Under the arcades and at the outdoor tables, facing the Palazzo della Ragione and the Clock Tower. It’s the Mantuans’ evening ritual, especially in the warmer months.
4. Dinner in a trattoria
Pumpkin tortelli, risotto alla pilota, pike in sauce and, to finish, a slice of sbrisolona. At weekends the trattorias in the centre fill up: best to book.
5. A stroll along the Rio
The canal that runs through the centre, with Giulio Romano’s Pescherie and its little bridges: in the evening it’s one of the quietest corners of the city.
6. An evening at the theatre
The Teatro Sociale hosts opera, drama and concerts; the Teatro Bibiena, the 18th-century gem where Mozart played, opens for concerts and festivals. Check what’s on during your stay.
