Mantua can be visited in any season, but each season shows you a different city. The climate is typical of the Po Valley: hot, humid summers, cold and often foggy winters, mild springs and autumns.
Here’s what to expect season by season, so you can choose the time that suits you best.

Mantua season by season
1. Spring (March – May)
Mild temperatures, gardens in bloom and long days: it’s the best time to walk around the centre and cycle around the lakes. Boat trips on the Mincio resume. On long holiday weekends the city fills up: book early.
2. Summer (June – August)
It’s hot and humid, especially in August: visit museums in the middle of the day and the lakes in the morning or at sunset. Between July and August the Upper Lake is covered in lotus flowers. On Ferragosto (15 August) the madonnari (pavement chalk artists) gather at Grazie.
3. September
The weather turns pleasant again and in the first half of the month there’s Festivaletteratura, five days of talks and events with writers in squares, churches and courtyards. It’s one of the liveliest times, but also one of the busiest: book hotels well in advance.
4. Autumn (October – November)
Pumpkin season: in the trattorias the tortelli are at their best. The days are quiet and the lakes change colour. From November the first fogs arrive, giving the city a suspended, dreamlike atmosphere.
5. Winter (December – February)
It’s cold and the fog can be thick, but museums are less crowded and you can visit at your own pace. At Christmas time the centre is lit up. It’s the season for boiled meats with mostarda and risotto alla pilota.
